My interpretation of the book is that the Giving tree and the boy have a parent to child relationship while teaching many important life lessons. In the book the parent being the tree gives the boy unconditional love throughout the book never keeping count. So she gives and gives and gives, never expecting anything in return, never asking for anything back, and never reminding the boy of all she has given up for him. For example when the boy needs a house after already…

“The Thing in the Forest” by A.S. Byatt uses formal and informal diction to replicate the form of children’s vocabulary as well as the adult lexicon. Because of the underlying theme of the narrative being how childhood trauma may shape adulthood, and in some cases, prompt growing up quicker than average, the use of both types of diction works well together to subtly assist the reader to connect childhood to adulthood. One such instance where the stark contrast between formal and informal diction occurs is in the first paragraph. When talking about what objects the children are carrying, Byatt writes, “With their suitcases, some of which were almost too big to carry, and their other impedimenta, a doll, a toy car, a comic, they were like a…

Another common trope in witch-wizard fantasy is, magic must always be present in some way. This means throughout the story there must be a magical source or somebody who has the power to produce magical powers. In my own novel “Hex Hall” there is magic found throughout the story since the main character is a witch, she casts spells whenever she pleases and her father is a warlock so she gets her magical side from him. In Harry Potter it is present considering they attend a school specifically for witchcraft and wizardry, every student who attends must be of the magical background. Another one in this sub-genre is having friends and allies.…

The tree will never be the same just as their relationship will never be the same. Even though the tree once stood strong in all its marvelous beauty, it is now split. What once stood so tall and strong is now been separated and each side of the tree faces different challenges. For example, the one side has to try its hardest to stay strong during the harsh winter season, this side, unfortunately, falls weak under the pressure of the cold linen blanket. Even though the tree is now two separate beings, it is still one “tree” for it is bound together by the strong roots that lie under the ground, together, even though it is broken.…

The Red Tree (Shaun Tan, 2001) is a children’s picture book that is both written and illustrated by Shaun Tan. The Red Tree is a book about depression, despair and ultimately, hope. The book follows a girl struggling with depression who, at the end of the book, finds hope in the form of a red tree. For a picture book to be successful, both the illustrations and written text generally can exist independently, but complement each other. There is a strong marriage between the written and visual language in Tan’s book that creates a harmonious connection to powerfully and effectively represent depression.…

In Allan Johnson’s book The Forest and the Trees, he notions that in order to understand the concept of social life, we have to not only look at the individual, but also at the environment the individual is placed and how they interact and create social systems. Johnson explains that “a forest is simply a collection of individual trees, but it is more than that. It is also a collection of trees that exist in a particular relation to one another, and you cannot tell what that relation is by looking at the individual trees.” (Johnson 2014) By using the imagery of the forest and trees, he shows how social systems and people influence each other.…
