In chapter 3 of “No Promises in the Wind” by Irene Hunt, Josh and Joey are leaving the freight train. Both of them wanting to leave the place that reminded them of the friend they lost.They entered a small town, and they both hung around the depot, grateful that no one payed attention to them. A man came out carrying groceries, and gave them a few cans of food.They took them gratefully and presumed their walking.

They eventually stopped to rest, and Josh decided to face the problem. He asked Joey if he wanted to return home. Josh knew that Joey would be wanted at home. But he still wanted to keep his distance from his father, Stefan Grondowski. But Joey was a faithful little brother, and he stayed by his brother’s side.

They continued all night until they found a place to stay. It was a ramshackle house, crumbling and nearly bare. The only welcome sight for the moment was the oven, which they lit and kindled. The heat encouraged them, and they both sat by warming their clothes. Josh went out to find something to eat, and he saw it: an old white rooster. They both ran for their lives, one trying to avoid being eaten and the other trying to eat. They went around the house a few times, and the rooster got caught in some wire. It was tough to cook and eat, but it was food.
