Chapter Summaries
Chapter One:The two main characters, Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters, meet in chapter one. Hazel Grace is a seventeen girl in remission from lung cancer, who has an oxygen cart, and is suffering from clinical depression.Therefore, her mother forces her to go to a support group for teenagers dealing with cancer. Augustus is in remission from osteosarcoma cancer and has a prosthetic leg, but is only at support group to support his friend Isaac, his friend who will soon be blind, due surgery to get rid of eye cancer.They meet at Support Group and then Hazel goes home with Augustus to watch V for Vendetta, a movie in which the main character, according to Augustus, looks like Hazel.
Chapter Two: In chapter two Augustus drives Hazel to his house, where they watched the movie and exchange books. Before watching the movie, they go downstairs to Augustus’s room and talked about their lives and interests. Augustus reads the email to Hazel and then gives her the email address, and Hazel writes an email to Peter Van Houten.Later that day, Hazel visits Isaac after his surgery and they spend the time together making jokes about terrible nurses.The next day Hazel wakes up and finds a email from Peter Van Houten. Peter tells Hazel that he could not tell her what happens to the characters after the books ends, except if they were to meet in person. This is highly unlikely to happen, because Hazel lives in Indiana, while Peter Van Houten lives in Amsterdam.
