Chapter One Of Genesis In The Old Testament

Decent Essays
In chapter one of Genesis in the Old Testament, it talks about creation. It took God six days to create something amazing and one day for Him to rest and to look back at His work. God worked very hard to make sure everything was correct. He went day by day, starting with day and night. Each day He had created something different. God had added the sky, made plants grow along with fruit, put stars into the sky to see at night, and lastly He created animals than humans. Each one of the six days, something new was put on this earth. The amount of detail that was put into this thinking had to be very tough. As we can see mentioned in Genesis chapter 1, God thought long and hard about what He was going to put onto this earth. Humans were the last

The Israelites were YHWH's chosen people; set apart from other civilizations (Deuteronomy 7:6). This provides the explanation for all of the laws that the Israelites were to follow - like what foods to eat - because it visibly showed how the were different from those around them. Obviously, Genesis would also need to provide an explanation for what the neighboring tribes did that would make them abominable to YHWH. In the beginning of Deuteronomy 7, the Israelites are called to utterly destroy the neighboring tribes and to not marry off their children with members of the other tribe. Genesis provides the framework and rationalization for Israelites to follow YHWH's commands later on.…

A plain reading of the scripture does not suggest anything other than a normal day. The Hebrew word for day (Yom) is well researched, the usage in the context of Genesis 1 does not indicate anything other than a normal day . This, to me, is the most compelling evidence for a day being a day, roughly 24 hours. Another good point is in reference to the idea of a day being a thousand years. Following the order of creation this would require plants to live 1,000 years before the sun was created as well as endure 500 years of night .…

Laudato Si’ is the second encyclical of Pope Francis – Our Holy Father addresses all people, not just the faithful. In the closing paragraph of the encyclical, Pope Francis writes on the negative effects he has seen/experienced concerning God’s creation, “current attitudes and behaviors are not only wrong in a moral sense, they are also wrong in a practical sense. They have not worked. They have given us a world that is broken and unjust: where the wealthy worry about obesity while the extreme poor have next to nothing, and the whole planet… “is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.” This is no accident, for when “nature is viewed solely as a source of profit and gain, this has serious consequences for society.”…

The creation story depicts human beings as the zenith of God’s creative activity. Their uniqueness is portrayed in two separate and complementary accounts. Genesis chapter 1 is a terse overview of all creation while Genesis chapter 2 shows that God lavished very personal and particular attention on the creation of both Adam and Eve. Significantly, it was only humans of whom God said, “Let us make mankind [“human being,” not exclusively “male”] in our image, in our likeness” (1:26), “so that they may rule . . . over all the creatures” (1:26).…

Genesis says that God created the heavens and the earth, but in the next few verses the distinction is made between the sky and the heavens. This distinction is made when God creates a “vault” to separate the water from the water, which created the sky in between these two sets of water (Genesis 1). In the Native American story the touching of sky and water caused the creation of the First World (Navajo Creation Story). In the Christian tradition the end of God’s six days of creation signified the creation of Earth and of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 1). This is important because both of those locations were considered holy places and were signified as perfect.…

Throughout the ages, there has been an ongoing debate in the Christian society over how God created the world. The Bible seems to tell the creation story very clearly, but there are many different interpretations of what it actually means. There are mainly two sides to the debate: the side that says the creation story is very literal and the side wch says the creation story is metaphorical. In the past, many arguments have arose over these different topics and there have been many variations of evolution theories, many of those trying to mix God’s creation with scientific theory. As Christians, it is hard to know for sure how the Earth was truly mad because of God’s power to do anything, but all that can be done is to make an educated, Bible based guess.…

Certainly, current understanding of the Creation story has gone through an intensive level of examination, because of people’s quest for answers from the Bible’s verse, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” by using many ways of criticism (KJV). A start point for critics and theologians, to develop and analyze, what took place during this complicated process. Furthermore, in Genesis 1:31, “God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good,” and completed on “the sixth day,” also brings the whole creation story full circle (KJV). Which this very, early literary description, became the norm, first for the Hebrew people, and now for Christians, because of how these traditions were passed down. Being, that…

There are several themes that run throughout the Bible. Covenants, love, grace, and mercy are just a few of them. Along with these, there are ones some that are on the other side of the spectrum like death, unfaithfulness, and alienation. Alienation is a key theme in Genesis and continues throughout the Old Testament. First found in Genesis, alienation started in the Garden of Eden and affects man’s relationship with God, the garden, the people, and the land.…

This, at first, greatly hindered scientific advancement. The church – because of it’s own prideful blindness – spent too much time opposing the new theories, instead of engaging them and really considering them. They could not have considered that the new findings could bring them closer to an understanding of God and His creation. We must not fall into the same trap. We should not let our own dogma get in the way of scientific advancement.…
