Ted Talk Chapter 1

Chapter 2 discusses how to ask for something and the best way to go about it. Twete starts off by telling the story of Lior Zoref and how he wanted to bring an ox on stage for a TED Talk. Twete showed Zoref’s email to TED and noted that one of the most important things when making an ask is to make it, then shut up. It is important not to ramble on and to get to the point when asking. This is a really important tip for me because I tend to beat around the bush when asking for things, so I will work on being politely direct.

After you’ve figured out where your contacts fit, you create a networking map and figure out what areas need improvement and how diverse your group is. Twete also recommends using your university’s alumni group, using friends and family, thinking of LinkedIn as a place to find the connections of your connections, and using your family as a resource. She said we need to think of ourselves as a product that needs to be sold and promoted. She said the best way to do this is to create a personal marketing plan that consists of a professional objective, the function or positions you’re looking for, a positioning statement, competencies and skills, personal attributes, and a target market. Also, according to special guest Julie Cottineau, it’s important to put a twist on your brand and think of combining two people or companies you admire who you want to emulate your own brand off
