Chapter eight looks at how blending younger and older generations enhances each other’s abilities. Either generation can become the student or the teacher, because so much has changed that either generation can give knowledge of how they learned (Beynon & Alfano pg121). Chapter eight includes two case studies that deal with the blending of the older and younger generations. The first case study deals with a boys and men’s choir. The Amabile Boys and Men’s Choirs case study provided that the younger generations could learn from the older. It also helped shaped the young boys by giving them mentors. The ages started at children and went to seniors. By having such a rang gave the boys some experience to work with from their mentors. It helped the community when/if schools had to make cuts, usually music and arts are the first to get cut. It gave the boys a musical outlet. However, it is still different. Chris Alfano made a band for middle aged adults to seniors, men and women. It acted as a school band where a kid would pick an instrument and learn how to play it. They later on would work with the kids in the schools. They each kind of learned from each other since they were both learning how to play. This helped break a stereotype by saying that the youth can teach the elderly. People don’t really think of it that way because we think of our elders to be wise with old age. It proves the saying, “you can teach an old dog new tricks”. Synergy is developing from the intergenerational learning environment (Beynon & Alfano pg131). Chapter nine explores the challenges and development of music through a person’s lifespan. It explains the benefits that music can have on us as youths and as seniors.
