She stands for a moment not responding to the fact her family has just been killed by the same falling building she was just saved from; watching her family die in an awful way made her feel empty inside. There was a struggle actually finding the food, moving pieces of brick and some deceased bodies that had been crushed from falling cement. They return to their shelter area and put a can of beans they found over the fire by balancing it on two sticks. “Let’s go.” They hurried out to the car, and began driving through the streets, in excited and suspenseful silence until they reached the run-down paper factory. It had been shut down due to irreversible mold and termite damage, and the city hadn’t sold the property yet, so the whole looming structure still stood. Nicole got out of the car, staring breathlessly at the gloomy building littered with graffiti and broken glass. Zach reassuringly grabbed her hand and they walked up to the door.…

Personal Narrative rough draft : Car accident It was early in April of 2016, sunny and beautiful, the day was sure to be full of excitement and energy as student council speeches are due and the final trimester of the year was slowly coming to an end. I woke up that morning to my mother blissfully waking me up with my light turning on and her sweet beautiful voice saying “Wake up, Joey,” I slowly rolled out of bed and stumbled into the shower trying hopelessly to escape the morning and the horrible sensations of waking up early on a Wednesday. As the warm water rushed over me I rehearsed in my head how I would present my student council speech to my teacher. Little did I know how different it would actually be that day.…

The stories in this chapter are typical of the times and vividly portray the gradual, disarming, and even confusing nature of the transformation that took place shortly after the war as the Valley began to shed its agricultural roots. I was born in San Jose in 1947 (a third generation native), and started working on my grandfather’s ranch of apricots, prunes, and walnuts at the age of eight. Like the other younger children, I starting out picking up "ground fruit" from under the trees. I remember vividly how pleased with myself I was after the first tree, and my sense of achievement as I approached the end of the first row. Then the reality sunk in—the next row.…

A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…

There’s an ugliness to not knowing how to experience something until you experience it yourself. It collides into you like an avalanche, burying and oppressing you; at least that is the feeling I experienced the day we got robbed. It happened when my parents and I were celebrating my grandparents’ anniversary. My father’s phone buzzed with life and so he plucked it from his pocket, fingered a button, and pressed the receiver against his ear. Immediately I knew something was terribly wrong, as his countenance paled enough to rival the moon.…
