In chapter 4 of the book Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen, we learn more about the characters in the plantation and we even learn about more characters and their backstories. First we learn about a character named Alice, she used to be a field hand but then she became a breeder, but she daydreams and walks up to the white house. Waller sees her and he whips her and leaves Alice to hang on the board all night. Even though she survived all of that she will never be the same again. There were two other people that tried to run away, one was Jim and the other one was Pawly They were both caught by the dogs and died. The next day Alice tries to run away but is caught by the Waller’s dogs. Also Nightjohn was once a free man, he escaped but he came back
