Consider the following scenario: Mary is a tenth grade student whom you know has questions about gender identity. You allow the student to use the health office bathroom in an effort to provide support with these personal issues. Lately, Mary has been picking fights with other students or having verbal altercations with staff on days 1 and 3 of the school's 6-day calendar rotation. As a result, on these days Mary either spends the remainder of the day in "in-school" detention, or your health office for treatment of the fight injuries, then to detention. Mary has gym class in the afternoons of days 1 and 3.

Mary’s behavior, such as picking fights or verbal altercations are not acceptable to her classmates or to the staff. According to McCarthy et al. (2013), Mary’s behavior is called externalizing. Externalizing behaviors are displayed outwardly by the student (p.1064). While Mary is getting cleaned up from her last fight, I will use this time to interview her about what happen. I will allow her to tell me what happened in her own words, who started the fight, and is the other person hurt or okay? As we speak, I will use the 35 question from the ABC (A (Antecedent stimuli) B (Behavior) C (Consequences)) Behavior Model. The reason to start off with the ABC behavior model is because this behavior recently started happening and it seems to only happen on days 1 and 3 during the afternoon when she has gym class. As we work on the 35 questions, this will help her to hopefully see that her pattern of behavior is disruptive to the class that she is in and to others around her. After getting her side of the story, then speaking with her teachers and gym teacher to help us understand when this behavior began and if they can pinpoint exactly what might have triggered her externalizing behavior. If she has
