Chapter 12, Using Language, opened with the statement, "the words we use to label an event determine to a great extent how we respond to it." Language is everything when we want to express how we feel or what we think. Overall, the most important thing about this chapter is to know how to use language accurately, clearly, vividly, and appropriately. Words have two meanings, denotative and connotative. Denotative is precise, literal, and objective. Connotative is variable, figurative, and subjective. Along with knowing that words can have two meanings, I think knowing exactly the meaning of a word is a key point. You should never use a word unless you're sure of its meaning and it's used in the correct context.
