In Chapter 11, Cole does whatever it takes to keep him alive, which including eating whatever he could find to obtain the necessary energy. At the beginning of the chapter, Cole caught a mouse and was fortunate enough to devour it completely before it escaped. Although disgusting, it was required in order for Cole to survive. Then, Cole noticed some seagulls pecking at his puke. At that moment, Cole realized just how badly he wanted to live. The food which he had thrown up was still food, technically. Cole didn’t want the thieving seagulls to steal what he considered as “life” from him. Frantically, Cole began to jerk his arms at the gulls.
