Chapter 10: Small Group Communication

Chapter 10, in the Human Communication The Basic course, is titled “small group communication.” This title of the chapter harmonizes well with the project that my group and I were given. With this project, we were to research on a specific topic and explain what the U.S. could do about it. While researching for the project, the group and I collectively experienced or used some of the strategies or examples that were used in the book. Group stages, task building, and individual roles, experiences in polarization and groupthink, and leadership styles are just many of the examples that occurred. When we started the project, it was just I and another student. Approximately a day or two later we heard from more of the group members. There was some confusion, but it all worked out since everyone got his or her duties done on time. Since I was the group liaison. I kept in touch with Professor Phillips and let her know what was going on. Overall, the group and I got the job done and it though it wasn 't easy, we figured it out through some problem solving and solutions. Gladly, there was no polarization, and there was no groupthink was well. We tried very had to avoid both of these since we made sure everyone had a good online experience and always had our team members voice their concerns. There are an abundance of leadership styles, however in our group, there was a mixture of transformational, functional, and situational. With transformation, our group leader did well in encouraging members that were doing well. Functional, the group leader set goals and rules for us to follow. In addition, she gave direction if we needed it. Lastly, with situational, since the group leader always ensured the “satisfaction the group members.”(pg. …show more content…
This was my first time taking an online class, so my expectations in regards to the group project weren’t very high. I say this because I had to learn that everyones schedule is quite different. However with planning and consistency you can definitely make it work. When taking an online class and even doing projects like these, you have to be flexible and be on top of assignments like these. If I were to do this again, I wished that the communication was a bit stronger however we tried our best due to the time we were given. It was a challenge but I learned a
