After being married for a few years, Atticus’ wife passed away unexpectedly. His wife suffered a sudden heart attack that took her life. This was something that ran in her family and had taken lives of her relatives earlier. Before his wife passed away they had two children together. They had a son named Jeremy, or Jem, and a daughter named Jean, or Scout. Mrs. Finch was the mother to these children until Jem was about six and Scout was two. This left Scout with very vague memories of her mother. Jem, on the other hand, remembered his mother more, causing him to occasionally miss her. The children always had an interest in their mysterious neighbor named Boo Radley. During the summer of 1930, this influenced them to start playing a games called “Boo Radley.” They continuously played this game until one day Atticus caught them playing their game. Atticus asked them if their game shared any relation to the Radleys. Jem lied to his father and said it didn’t. Still, Attics game the kids a sharp disapproval in their game and told them to stop. He didn’t get very irate, but simply asked them to quit. This made the kids feels unsafe to continue their game.
In this event, Atticus learned that his children were messing around with the Radleys. He didn’t get to in depth in the situation or really look into Jem’s lie. Still, he just requested for the children to stop playing the game. Atticus is a man of morality and tolerance, so he wasn’t going to let the kids mess around with the innocent Radley family. Atticus didn’t get enraged or disciplinary with the children. Instead, he was very subtle and pleasant in his request to the children, giving them the chance to fix their wrongs. He urged the kids to do what is right and respect others. It was the middle of the night, but that didn’t stop Atticus from doing whatever he could to help his neighbor. He was motivated to aid Miss Maudie and make the situation better. This event showed him the effects of people coming together to help a cause. The whole neighborhood came together and improved the situation. Atticus continued to be an example to others during this event. While helping out, he made the realization that Boo Radley threw a blanket over Scout. He told the kids they had to keep this to themselves though, as he didn’t want rumors to spread or the Radleys to be bothered. Atticus showed his compassion and understanding for other many times during this event, while working to help
