Today, it still stands at 90 feet tall, still looking over the city. There is a moat and two Roman construction defensive curtain walls, which makes a concentric pattern around the fortress. The Traitor's Gate was built during a renovation of the Tower as an additional entrance between 1275 and 1279 during the reign of Edward I. The moat that surrounds the Tower complex was dug during the reign of Richard the Lionhearted. My family moved to Meridian, MS from California when I was around six or seven years old. Since then, all the way up to the ninth grade, my mother took my sister and me to Saint James A.M.E. Church for Sunday services. One Sunday, a cousin of mine brought me along to the service of her new church, and ever since then I have been attending New Freedom Tabernacle. I have found that NFT has certain qualities about it that have always attracted my attention in ways that St. James could not; so, I became an official member of NFT within a few months of the switch. St. James and NFT are two very separate, distinct churches in a multitude of ways, yet they also carry certain traits that make them very similar.…

The Rothko Chapel, located in Houston, Texas, presents a deceptively simple exterior. The ungarnished brick walls lack intrigue or grandeur, the doorway is simply a means of entrance rather than a spectacle, yet over 55,000 visitors are drawn to the location every year (YouTube). The sanctuary inside is just as plain, aside from fourteen imposing murals created by the chapel’s namesake, Mark Rothko. They adorn bare walls, constantly shifting appearance with the light cast from the chapel’s skylight (Dowell). They seem to be the only lively aspects of an otherwise static place.…
