Sir Richard Branson is the founder and CEO of the Virgin Group. The Virgin Group is an umbrella company for a wide variety of Branon’s other business ventures over the years. The Virgin Company has nearly 200 companies scattered across the globe in 30 countries. Over the 30 years since the Virgin Group’s founding, Richard Branson has built up the he organization from the small student run magazine that it started out as, to the gigantic multimillion dollar organization that it is today. From the small student run magazine, to Virgin Atlantic airline, to Virgin Galactic (Branson’s next endeavor to space); Sir Richard Branson shows that he is not only a rebound businessman, he is an exceptional leader. He breaks a lot of the myths that there are about leaders. These myths about leader development tend to limit what people think about what is needed to be considered a good leader. One of the popular myths about leaders are that they are born and not made. Branson disproves this myth because, for one, he was born with dyslexia. This disability, if the myth was true, would prove to be a huge setback for him. Another myth says that “one only needs common sense to be a good leader.” (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy, n.d., p.11). Richard Branson’s leadership helps to disprove this myth because the term common sense is too ambiguous. The term implies that there is a common body of knowledge that every person possesses; this is simply not possible. Also, since common sense observations can often be misleading, Mr. Branson relies on his experiences and observation and the experiences and observations of his follows to influence his business decisions rather than plan common
