Though chaos is caused by the conflict of fighting and killing of Macbeth throughout the play, the main conflict is an internal one, between Macbeth’s ambition and morality. Macbeth’s internal conflict between his morals and ambition begins from the prophecies of the witches. Initially, the witches prophesy seem to be unbelievable but when Ross greets him with the title Thane of Cawdor in act 1, scene 3 “And, for an earnest of a greater honour, he bade me, from him, call thee thane of Cawdor: In which addition, hail most worthy thane, For it is thine.” The witches had already prophesied this, and Macbeth wonders if he will have to commit a terrible act to fulfil the ambition the witches have planted.
