Every morning, just as the sun goes up the constant flux of morning alarms begin. Whether this noise is just a quiet beep or a siren going off, these noises are known well by teens around the world. The alarm clocks go off, aggravating the sleeping teens. What these teens wouldn’t do for more sleep. But do they really know the trouble more sleep will have on their school systems and lives. A change seems so simple, yet it will drastically affect their future, their after school responsibilities and commitments, and their transportation. School start times should remain the same. Keeping school start times the same will help students prepare for their future. During students’ teenage years, more sleep is a wish. As these teens grow older that …show more content…
The buses that take students to school travel all over town, to every house, and to every school. A change could throw off the entire district, and result in very dangerous situations, such sickness and hunger. A change will cause younger students to have to wake up earlier. The opposition may argue that, younger children wake up early naturally. Having to get to the bus stop an hour earlier will not affect them, but constantly being ill due to the dry, unsafe winter air they must face will affect them. Kids who get sick easily will be out of school even more than normal, especially in the winter, causing them to miss school work and many days of school. By missing school kids will fall behind in their work and be more likely to be held back. In the article “High schools with late start times can help teens but bus schedules and after-school can conflict” Harris Cooper states that, “Parents of the younger kids complained that in winter, it meant their 6-year-old would have to stand out in the dark and cold an hour earlier.” The buses are used for elementary, middle and high school, by changing the start time it will cause young children to have to stand out in the cold, dry air, causing them to be more prone to sickness. Being sick more often will then go on to affect how they function in school and how often they are in school. A change will also …show more content…
This change would affect the future of the students, the activities and responsibilities of these students, and the bus schedules, causing great danger for the younger children. The risk a change places on younger students is not worth additional sleep for older students. Therefore, school start times should remain the

School times can sometimes be absurdly early, but because of later start times some problems stir up. Later school start times can increase grades and the well being of the kids, but the downfall of that is that schools have to pay extra for more buses because usually a district only has a few busses, which then makes the school start times staggered. Although the wellbeing of kids is far more important. The idea of staggering school time is smart but if its hurting the health of people I would pay the extra money to keep kids safe. The first reason that school should start later is because it will allow kids to be more well rested and makes it easier to focus.…

A common argument against a later start time is bus tiers. The Morning Edition, an American radio news program, did a segment with a woman named Michelle Trudeau titled “High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens.” She speaks on the effect of school start time and discusses how one of the key roadblocks to changing school start times is the bus tier and extensive transportation scheduling (“High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens”). It is important to recognises this as something people try to use against a later start time, because it is a fair and valid point, but also one that can be overcome. It is a roadblock for a later start time simply because of how intricate and fine tuned a bus schedule is.…

It can also affect many school activities with having to start later and end sooner since the day ends faster. Teens shouldn’t be affect with these possibilities of not being in an activity because the later changes. There has been a non-scientific survey that has reported 50 percent of parent that have agree or are undecided with the new time changes and 60 percent of staff agreed with the change. I believe that parents think it’s right for their children to start later or earlier because of the evidence that they have been provided about their children academic improvement. Staff had worked in school with the children and they might also believe it is right because it can change their school education but they don’t understand that it can affect the different schools because it will not be the same times for all…

Pediatrician Judith Owens, lead author of the policy statement, “School Start Times for Adolescents” stated that “adolescents who get enough sleep have a reduced risk of being overweight or suffering depression, are less likely to be involved in automobile accidents, and have better grades, higher standardized test scores and an overall better quality of life.” These are the goals for both the students and school districts, so making this change would benefit…

Recent studies show that students who wake up at times different than their “natural sleep clocks” have an easier time adjusting to the times they’ll have to wake up at when they start to work. When students don’t go directly to college they go into the workforce, meaning they will need to be awake and prepared at a different time. Schools should not start or end later to accommodate student’s “natural sleep clocks” due to the fact that before and after school some students need to take care of younger siblings as well as other students who may go to work. Firstly, teenagers often have younger siblings that need to be helped to get ready early in the morning for school and help them after school.…

It has become troublesome and confusing to me as to why our local school district would require children in intermediate school (10 to 12 years old) to start school at 7:40 a.m. Please note that this is their start time and doesn’t include their actual wake up time, prep time and travel to school. As I began to research this more in depth I was stunned to find the numerous effects and potential effects in relation to academics, physiological and the emotional distress it could have on students. My wife and I also reached out to other students’ parents and became even more intrigued as that they shared the same concerns and problems they recently were seeing in their own children. I honestly believe when something becomes more personal…

By doing so, students would have better academic performance because they would be able to get enough sleep for the night and be more active for the next day. A huge problem facing schools districts and students is the lack of sleep some students get at night. If students start earlier then they get to leave earlier (classroom.synonym.com). This opinion is false because even if school will still begin at the same time as usual and kids will still be tired. Even if school did start earlier it would not be worth it for kids and teenagers because they need more sleep, which would mean they would need to go to bed earlier in the evening to get in a full eight hours. With sports, homework and other activities it is not possible for kids to go to bed early enough to get up in the morning. This would only be more harmful, even if it meant getting to leave school earlier.…

A high school student is one of the most hard working individuals in the education system, especially a student that aims for success. During the 4 years that teenagers spend in high school challenges like homework, circadian rhythm imbalance, and extracurricular activities, may cause some setbacks to a student’s goal for success. It is possible to overcome such challenges, but as more time consuming dilemmas arise the time remaining for slumber will only decrease. As a result, students start losing sleep because of the multiple assignments of homework, long hours of extracurricular activity participation, and even restless nights due to the change in a teenagers biological clock. Furthermore, as reported by Emily Richmond, the public editor for The Atlantic, more than 40 of the 50 states start earlier than 8:30 AM, which in turn would mean that the early morning start prevents students who are suffering from sleep deprivation from having the chance to obtain the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep needed per night.…

Americans will spend $15 billion dollars per year to help cure their sleep problems or even try to (Behrens and Rosen 461). According to Behrens and Rosen “Up to forty million Americans suffer from sleep disruptions that trigger serious health risks, which include cardiovascular disease, obesity and depression” (Behrens and Rosen 461). Not getting enough sleep (eight hours minimum) can cause a lot of problems in a teen’s life. Sometimes not all getting enough sleep can kill young adults. Young adults that are driving need to pay attention to if they are sleepy or not because if they are they need to pull over somewhere and get the rest they need.…

So now that we have talked about the present, we must look ahead. Stop looking at the problems we face now, and look ahead to the things we can do in the future to supplement our students with a better educational experience. There are many that argue that moving school start times later would be too costly. However, a study prepared by the Hamilton Project, called “Organizing Schools to Improve Student Achievement: Start Times, Grade Configurations, and Teacher Assignments” weighs the costs and benefits of the change, and wants to make sure they are heard on the matter. According to the article, the major change that would have to occur would be the bus system.…
