Changing Moments

The first book I remember that had changed me was One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. This was the first book that I could read and understand since coming to America. My family and I came to California in 2008 from Vietnam. I was 8 at that time and does not know to speak or write English yet. Seeing as I was new and does not know how to speak or understand simple English words, she gave me a dictionary from Vietnam to English and the One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish book. I remember how accomplished I felt after finish reading the book because it took me so long to finish the book. Due to that accomplishment, I started to want to read more type of similar books where I could understand what is going on. That was also when I started to pay more attention to what was going on in whatever I read, even in books I do not like to read.

In 5th grade, we would always take tests online after reading books to win some type of prize or incentive but, I do not remember clearly what it was exactly. I remembered that I want to get the prize or incentive, so I started to read a higher level book than I can. That made me very frustrated since I do not know what is going on. I want to quit the book but, I still preserved so that I do not get teased by my friend. I use the dictionary to help me find what the difficult words meant and finished the book. After reading and understanding the book, I loved it and want to find similar books. This event sparked my interest in reading more challenging books and finishing

Unlike the literature I am required to read during the school year, the books that I read for pleasure are more focused on issues that can relate to one's actual life. The books I read for pleasure are more of a release. For example, I read "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel to get a better view on the idea of intangible belief and dry factuality. I enjoyed "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury because it provided a new perspective on the idea of censorship. I also read "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Of Mice and Men" in order to receive valuable insight on the idea of loss of innocence.…

This assignment presented a bit of a challenge, as it has been slightly over three decades since being a young teen. Also, since books were a significant portion of my life growing up and I was an advanced reader, it remains nearly impossible to isolate, which of the life altering books I read, at which stages of my life. Gone with the Wind, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, To Kill a Mockingbird, Little Women, Diary of Anne Frank, Westmark, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Island of the Blue Dolphins; it seems this list could continue forever, each beloved, tattered book still has a home on my bookcase and in my heart, and have their effect on my life and personal perspective. Although it may be possible I read it slightly later in my teen years, I finally settled on…

This semester I read 6 books; QB exchange, Game Changers, Fantasy League, Game Changers Two, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, and American Sniper. Reading books in an independent manner is very important, you can learn other people’s story and life lessons. You could also become much smarter and expand your vocabulary as well as knowledge in topics that interest you, such as I did when I read Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. While reading these books, I learned even though the journeys in life can be challenging they always pay off once you reach the destination.…

My favorite piece of literature is A Child Called “It” by David Pelzer. I encountered this book in the sixth grade because my teacher had recommended it to me. This was the book that commenced my devotion to reading books. I was motivated to expand my knowledge of books. It took a little over three weeks of intensive reading to finish the book and was the hardest read I have encountered this year. The book seemed to simply list events, rather than tell a collective story. It wasn’t until I reached near the ending that I realized how all the events started to tie together. I found myself going back in the story to re-read many parts of the book after I had read something to help me understand that certain part. I also read this book within a set time frame while working full time.…

My mom always says, “readers are leaders”. You don't need to be valedictorian or captain. You simply need to make your own discoveries, maintain your values and not take a back seat in this ride called life. These are attributes I believe I possess. If anyone asked me, "Sofia, what has helped you to become a leader and the person you are today?"…

Reading has been a passion of mine since I was a child. The first book I remember reading while grasping an important concept was The Giver by Lois Lowry. The novel focuses on a young boy who lives in a society that enforces conformity as well as restricts emotions and emotions. The boy gains a sense of individualism from the new emotions he is allowed to feel. This rebellion against an oppressive society helped pique my interest in dystopian novels.…

Thinking back as far as I can, my favorite book was The Velveteen Rabbit. I have very few memories of this book except every time I read it I would cry at certain parts of it. I recall crying because the rabbit wanted to be loved by a little boy so that he could become real, only to be thrown away and realize being real isn't something you are but instead something you feel. The book brings back feeling from when I have felt similar to the rabbit, wondering about how to become something you aren't and having to come to the realization that you can only be what you are intended to be. The book made ma rehash feelings because I have struggled finding where I belong much like the…

I can remember learning to read as early as kindergarten, but before that, I was able to memorize repetitive words in children’s book or words that were a sing along. My mother taught me how to read. She would act out the words in the sentence like a scene in a movie. At first I wanted only to look at the pictures because the images conveyed so much meaning. I would take time to stare at the illustrations so I could try to determine what the sentence on the page was about, but my vocabulary was limited.…

I remember the very first book I ever read, it was a paper book made by my teacher. The illustrations looked as though a child had drawn them with a pack of crayons, the sentences were very short and very boring. I remember reading “Pat sat down” over and over, “Pat drinks juice.” The simplest sentences ever, and I had to read that same ridiculous book everyday. It was that small, elementary book that made me hate reading.…

I continued to scrape by on books with a lower reading level until in the sixth grade. I decided I wanted to try reading the Harry Potter books again so I could discuss them with my friends. However, by that point my minimum reading level was too high to receive points from reading the first Harry Potter book which was a lower reading level. Not wanting to read a book that I would not receive credit for reading, I started in on the second book, completely lost as to what was going on at first. Once I read a few chapters of the book, I began to understand what was going on, and I became engrossed in the story that was…
