Changes In Marriage Over Time
Marriage and divorce have changed a lot over the years due to many reasons. Many things have influenced marriage. Education, financial security, child marriage, arranged vs. love marriage, are all things that have affected marriage. Marriage rates have decreased over the years due to these different factors. Education seems to have a big impact on marriage in present times more than it has in the past. In the article “The Marriage Crisis” the author Aja Gabel, talks about why marriage rates are dropping and divorce rates have increased since the 1900’s. The article also states that cohabitation is on the rise. Now there are people living together outside of marriage and children. A recent study that was held at Pew Research Center found that more and more unmarried adults are coming to a conclusion that marriage is outdated. The article shows a sociology professor from the University of Virginia (UVA) that argues that marriage carries value that are important in an intimate relationship. He states, “ Marriage conveys a sense of meaning , purpose, direction, and stability that tends to benefit adults and especially children. People who get married have an expectation of secual fidelity, and that fidelity tends to endanger a sense of trust and security.” On the contrary another sociology professor, Allison Pugh argues that how well the family cares for the children is more important than the institution of marriage (“Marriage Crisis” 6).
