In some parts of the globe, global climate change will increase the incidences of heat waves and droughts, which could result in the deaths of large numbers of people and reduced crop production. A 2005 study by Aiguo Dai found that areas of earth experiencing drought increased from 15% to 30% between 1979 and 2002. On the opposite end of the spectrum, global climate change can also result in increased flooding. There is also controversy over whether global warming will increase the frequency and severity of hurricanes and tropical storms.
