Changes In Older Adults

Decent Essays
Older adults are stigmatized as not able to be sexually or romantically involved. This is far from the truth and is a misconception that needs to change. According to Stein “While the frequency or ability to perform sexually will generally decline modestly as seniors experience the normal physiological changes that accompany aging, reports show that the majority of men and women between the ages of 50 and 80 are still enthusiastic about sex and intimacy.” (p.1). I think that older adult’s sex life should not be defined by age. Sex has health benefits such as increase blood flow, eases stress, increase exercise and is good for the heart. All of which are beneficial to all but especially older adults when they are experiencing health issues due

However, people’s sexual interests and desires do not disappear. A 75-year-old woman will most likely still be as interested in sex as she was when she was 25 (Hillier and Borrow, 2015, p.192). Sexuality is an important factor in romantic relationships; sexual satisfaction and the ability to be open about sex is extremely beneficial for a healthy relationship. Kay was hoping that by putting on makeup and doing her hair before bed Arnold would want to sleep with her, but he doesn’t seem interested in sex. This upsets Kay because she is still very much attracted to her husband and interested in sex, but she feels as though he isn’t attracted or interested in her anymore.…

The GP’s felt that sexual health is more an issue for younger people and that it is not relevant or a legitimate topic to discuss with older patients. They stated that it is a rather private topic and it may break the doctor-patient relationship (Gott, Hinchliff & Galena, 2004). This notion is further reinforced with the lack of research and attention placed on sexual health related problems within the gerontology field (Gott & Hinchliff, 2003). As well as the lack of training GP’s are receiving in their studies, despite the increase in evidence to support the need for more training in this…

As we age it does not mean that we lose interest in sex but as we grow older our bodies change and we have to adapt our lifestyles and sexual practices to accommodate those changes. Sex and intimacy is important part of a healthy relationship at any age. As Dr. Sewell (2014) pointed out in his video on Sex and Aging there are misconceptions or myths in regards to older adults not enjoying sex or benefitting from intimacy. These misconceptions about older adult’s sexual activities may stem from our societies stereotype of how we view the elderly as individuals who no longer have a desire for sex or physically able to have sex.…

The video “Mature Lifestyles on Aging and Intimacy: Facts and Fiction was interesting to me. A majority of individuals in our society when they think of mature adults, they rarely think about this population having sex or being intimate past a certain age in life. The component that stuck with me is, the ageism belief that “as we age, we lose the need for intimacy” (Aging and Intimacy: Facts and Fiction, 2011). A majority of people have the desire to be and remain intimate with someone either physically, emotionally or both. Being intimate helps fulfill and gives us some purpose in life.…

As depicted in the film by Kay and Arnold, many people believe that older couples sleep in separate bedrooms, avoiding any romantic interactions. While the idea is sometimes true, the majority of couples continue sexual activity regularly. According to one study, 73% of respondent who were between the ages of 57 and 64 were sexually active. While the study showed that sexual activity did decrease with age, 26% of respondents ages 75 to 85 still participated in sexual activity (Lindau et al., 2007). Kay and Arnold, unfortunately, were part of the 27% that did not continue sexual activity.…

Older adults are subject to many anatomical and therefore physiological changes throughout the aging process. One of the many changes to occur is the kidney consistently decreases in size beginning at the age of 30 (McCance, Huether, Brashers, and Rote, 2014). Since the kidney is critical to maintaining water and electrolyte as well as acid and base balance as a result, the older adult population faces changes to acid base compensation abilities and decreased kidney function. While this population faces physiological fluid balance challenges, they are also being prescribed more diuretics than other medications (Rumble and Morgan, 1994). Diuretics function to increase water output by the kidneys and are prescribed greatly for this population…

With the advancement of medicine and technology, it is evident that there is a growing elderly population in the developed countries such as the United States. Perhaps, some casually phrase it as the “baby boomers getting older.” My experience as a nurse taught me that despite developments in modern medicine, there are challenges such as elderly independence and prevention of falls along with the combination of polypharmacy and multiple comorbidities posing as risks. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that 2.5 million people, with ages 65 and older, are treated in the emergency room for fall injuries (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013). Additionally, the CDC states that over 700,000 patients a year…

The consequences of frailty, a condition associated with age-related declines and other comorbidities, can have an enormous impact on aging lifespan health for many decades. Early detection of frailty is beneficial in gerontology care for risk stratification, treatment decision-making, and surgical planning in the older population. The consequence of frailty in older adults is not only increased risk of adverse health outcomes, but also higher rates of institutionalization, morbidity, postoperative complications, and mortality. Therefore, it is logical that as the aging population increases globally, escalating care burden of frail older adults might significantly affect either direct or indirect health-care costs. I know of two people that are middle aged and widowed. One a male friend of ours and the other my aunt. After 5 years of being a single adult they both continue to maintain their sexual integrity. Some might think it easier to do this than compared to a younger adult who has never been married. In the video Single Sexuality by Dr. Sharon Hart Morris (2016), it is pointed out by Jennifer Cisney (2016) that no matter what age a person is, they are still a sexual being so this indicates that even though they are older and probably wiser, they still struggle with the same sexual frustrations as a younger, unmarried person.…
