One of the constant changes that occur in the healthcare system is the population needs and the development of chronic and complex diseases. This has created multiple settings in healthcare where nurses can practice, and become part of the healthcare team mainly in acute, long-term, primary care and public health settings. This transition has occurred with the need to provide nurses with higher education and training that allows them to deliver safe, quality patient care. Providing higher level of education and training in nursing prepares entry-level nurses to easily transition from their academic preparation to practice in a range of settings, (Parahoo, 2014). More nursing education programs are transitioning into providing RNs with bachelor’s degrees and APRNs with doctorate degrees. The baccalaureate, master’s and doctorate degree in nursing education places an emphasis on research and evidence-based practice to improve patient-care. Kader Parahoo (2014) stated that, “There is a direct link between degree-level nurse education and the growth in nursing research,” (p.12). The interdisciplinary approach and increased population needs have provided an opportunity for nurses to be more involved in improving patient care, which promotes and advocates for nursing research and nursing research funding. With the integration of interdisciplinary care, and higher education requirements for nursing, nursing research will improve and funding for research will increase as the laws change to better serve the diverse population.
