From MKE to OKC
Everything happens for a reason, right? I born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; in a poor ghetto neighborhood. When I was four years old, my father left my mother and she became a single mother raising two kids on her own. In the long run, she meets my stepdad; who is an illegal Mexican immigrant and has two kids with him. On March 21, 2008, my stepdad was going to take my siblings and I to school. As we were about to leave, two men in black uniform came up to the car and asked us to go back inside the house. The men in uniforms jacket said ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). They went through our things as my stepfather called my mom to come home from work. As soon as mom got home, she was crying and ICE took him away. My mom put her story out there for everyone else to hear and did all that she could to bring him back, but there was no hope. He’ll be able to return when my brother is eighteen; right now my brother is thirteen. Well on June 22, 2009 my life changed. I was able to leave my past behind and start all over. I’ve met great amazing people throughout school and jobs; I have became more social ever since I moved to Oklahoma. I’ve been able to change my mindset and stay positive to help me get rid of all the negativity and bad habits. Moving to Oklahoma was a scary thought at first, but I am honestly glad my family and I moved to Oklahoma. It finally feels like home. In “Just Walk on By” by Brent Staples explains the language of fear, “ In that first year, my first year away from my hometown, I was to become thoroughly familiar with the language of fear.” Whenever it comes to visiting Milwaukee, personally it felt weird being back ever since the death of my uncle.
