Are People Born Good Or Evil Essay

Humans are all born as good but what make a person good or bad are the choices he or she makes in life. When a baby is born he is not born with the intent to do evil. The baby is born with the intent to learn and gain knowledge to make the decision of their role in life. It is in the early stages of life when a person finds themselves. A person is born with a clean slate then the person they will become is determined but, not written in stone. People can change; a person who has done evil in the past can change to a good person; this can happen in many different ways. Some people come to see that what they have done is wrong, other see the ramifications from society and some find a higher power such as God, Allah, Buddha and others. The majority of people are good and demonstrate goodness. This is shown in some of the novels I read this year. A great piece of literature that shows that people can change is To Kill a Mockingbird. For instance, the characters Scout and Jem are not sure how they feel about Black people but in the end do right by not being racist. The people of Maycomb are segregated; the Blacks live on one side of town and the whites on the other. The white people of Maycomb have their own social order. They divided people into groups such as the respectable people like the Finches, the poor such as the …show more content…
They are not inherently evil; some of the younger children act badly because they are mirroring the behavior of one of their peers, Jack. Jack is not an appropriate role model and some of the children take on his behavior. Jack is driven to this behavior because of circumstances and his lack of maturity and guidance. He started out with good intentions but later faltered. He said, “We 've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we 're not savages. We 're English, and the English are best at everything. John Locke’s ideas, who was a student at Oxford University, differentiated from the ideas of Hobbes in the way that Locke was not in favor of having a government, and did not see rebellion towards the government as an evil thing. John Locke also did not think that humans were born evil, he believed that humans were born good. “Locke did not see political unrest, or even revolution, as necessarily bad things, nor did he perceive human nature as inherently self-interested and aggressive” (Austin 100). The philosopher’s ideas helped start the Glorious Revolution in 1688. Although he shared the belief that people would give up some of their freedom in exchange for protection; Locke believed that the government were in a sense signing a contract…

Everyday, people carry on with their lives knowing that there is both good and evil in the world. Some might distinguish the evil outweighing the good, while others spot the good outweighing the evil. Whichever side one might choose from this debate, it is natural that for humans to stop and wonder about humanity. A recurring controversy that crosses over a person's mind is whether humans are naturally and inherently good or, worse, they’re naturally and inherently evil. Society tends to lean on the idea that humans are selfish, in fact, 78% of the population believes others to be more selfish than they really are.…

“When we are no longer able to change a situation-we are challenged to change ourselves”, As said by Viktor E Frankl. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, the main character Montag changed a lot due to the other characters around him. For example, at the beginning of the book Guy Montag didn’t care at all about books, but at the end Montag believed books were the key to saving everyone from a dystopian reality. Like when Clarisse asked if firemen used to put out fires rather than start them, Montag started getting curious about his way of life.…

People are not born evil, they learn bad things from the world. Zimbardo defines “evil” as the exercises of power to intentionally harm (psychologically), hurt (physically), and / or destroy mortally and commit crimes against humanity. People do have the capacity for evil but that does not make everyone a potential monster. Sharon Begley says that when people look at Timothy McVeigh they do not see a monster but they see a human. McVeigh had done a lot of bad things but at the end of the day we see him as nothing more than a human.…

Humans are Naturally Good Humans are naturally born good in the sense humans do what is in their best interest. By nature humans are innocent when they are born for they only know what is rewarding for them and detrimental. Humans only become vile when their best interests clash with someone else's or are taught to become desensitized by others from what is right or wrong.…

The Savage In Humanity In late 1972, a plane crashed in the Andes mountains, stranding a group of 45 people and forcing them to resort to cannibalism. Similarly, in The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a group of boys crash land on an island in the middle of the sea. The group initially attempts to maintain order, but by the end, there are two distinct, rivaling groups: those who have remained civilized and those who have turned to savagery. The only reason why people do not become corrupted and savage is because the morals and laws of society hold them back.…

Welcome to Eden. Beautiful, with fruitful trees and crystal oceans surrounding it on every side. The perfect paradise, unless you’re stranded there. In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses a religious allegory to prove that in times of crisis, most people stray away from a hope of salvation, but a select few have a strengthened relationship with God.…

This doesn’t mean that everyone is good, but it shows that everyone has some type of good in them. What leads this to be true is that without darkness, light can’t overshine, but without light there isn’t any darkness to overshine in the first place. The novel Lord of the Flies leads me to believe that good is more powerful than bad because of the fact that good always endures. In the book, everyone, (except for Simon and Piggy), is rescued at the end of the book. This means that…

To begin, only the smartest and the dumbest of people never change and sometimes change is good but also sometimes it is bad, it depends on somebody’s outlook on the change. For instance, in Soldier’s Heart Charley goes through some change, at the beginning he was very upbeat, full of life, and ready for an adventure. The Civil War ruined him, destroyed his soul, near the end of the book the author states, “He was tired and broken, walking with a cane and passing blood, and he knew it wouldn’t be long for him.” (Paulsen 98).…

After watching scary movies about children it makes you wonder if they were like that from the beginning when they were born or if they had some experiences to make them act in the way that would want to hurt someone. This has been a debate throughout history if humans are born evil or if they developed into being evil through traumatic experiences. You are rarely born to be a killer and feel the need at the age of two to go out and kill someone that is not something you come across everyday. “At the other end of the spectrum is the environmentalist … Their basic assumption is that at birth the human mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) and that this is gradually “filled” as a result of experience.”…

The characteristics of the boys prove that, given time and isolation humans’ natural instincts will overpower their nurtured behavior. The most prominent example of this regression would be the primary antagonist Jack. Jack first introduces himself as “Merridew” while putting on an air of sophistication. However, later on, he declares one of the most childish quotes in the book: “I’m not going to play any longer. Not with you.”…

I believe that the idea of people being naturally good or naturally evil is false. The reason that I believe this is because I think that the idea of what is good and what is false is relative to the society that you are exposed to. Different societies function off of different viewpoints, opinions, and ethical rulesets and therefore have different notions of what is evil and what is good. One example that supports this claim is from the lecture notes which basically described how long ago the practice of human sacrifice was considered acceptable, whereas in our society, we see this practice as barbaric and I believe that this change in opinion is due to the evolution of society.…

Is mankind inherently good or evil? A question as old as humanity itself. In William Golding’s "Lord of The Flies", however it is made abundantly clear to us that mankind is inherently evil. " Lord of The Flies" is a book about kids that survive a plane crash and are now trapped on the Island. As time goes by, the boys begin to lose sight of what's important and begin to act in a crazy and uncivilized manner.…
