One study reported 25% of nurses do not further their learning once they graduated and obtained licensure. If the employer or the state they practice does not mandate continuous learning, then the nurse will not engage in lifelong learning (Muliira et al., 2012). Some ways that nurses can continue to increase their knowledge is by reading journals, attending conferences or seminars in their scope of practice or to obtain their BSN.
The IOM is also endorsing that by the year 2020; there should be an 80 percent rate of the nurses working with a BSN. The IOM has made an affiliation with nurses that are employed and have a higher degree in nursing improve patient outcomes. However this recommendation poses several barriers and challenges that nurses are dealing with to meet this recommendation of obtaining their BSN. Hospitals and all organizations need to provide support and strategies so nurses can reach this goal. Many students that attend school today have chronic physical and mental disorders. Many of these students are placed on mediations that are indicated for hypertension but are used to treat attention deficit disorder. Several students are also on medications such as antipsychotics and anti-depressants that are indicated for adults and not children. The safety of the student’s is a hug concern that requires close supervision for both the positive and negative side effects of the medication. By school nurses assuring the safety of the students it promotes academic success.
