A society is a group of people living together in an organized fashion adhering to a particular structure. Each person living in this society has their designated place within the community and because of societal norms are expected to adhere to their position. Because of these societal norms, members of the community become shackled to the ways of their society. Bradbury and Plato argue that while the journey may be difficult and the obstacles to overcome scary, individuals must not become shackled by society because in doing so they block their paths to growth and progress.

Society tricks the individual into believing that complacency equals comfort. If life is going well then, an individual is not going to be bothered enough to make the changes that might ensure an even better life for themselves because they do not want to suffer the consequences that happen when an individual messes with the system. An individual would rather keep things the way they are rather than trying hard and overcoming obstacles in the way and risk fallout from their decision to fight the system. In “The Allegory of the Cave” Plato talks about the light and believes that it is the target or the goal for all people to strive towards to break the chains to the life to which they are bound. The chains of complacency and dependence bind society and keep it from progressing. The light talked about in “The Allegory of the Cave” is what “bothered” them to break free from the shackles and strive for a better life. In Fahrenheit 451 Montag was bothered by having to burn a lady’s book collection that was so precious to her that she chose to be burned
