Hal, Charles and Mercedes killed off almost all their dogs because they were unable keep up with the work load. Dave was suffering an illness, instead of caring for him or nurturing him back to health, the scotch half breed shot him. Almost all the owners work the dogs until they can no longer function, then they sell them. Eventually the dogs bodies cannot take anymore of the work, then the owners end up killing them.
