“Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.” -Arnold Bennett. In the story “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, Gary Soto shows how change occurs with interaction. Victor changed with interactions from Michael and Mr. Bueller. First off, Victor was a boy who really admires this girl Teresa and was destined to have Teresa as his girl. He had so many ideas to try to impress her even though there were consequences. He faked knowing French and even tried scowling and then he started to be himself and then Teresa wanted to study French with him. I think Mr. Bueller helped Victor change in a positive way because he told him an experience he had as a kid which helped Victor be himself. But I think Michael …show more content…
According to the text it states, “Teresa asked him if he would help her with French. ‘Sure anytime ,’ Victor said. ‘I won’t be bothering you, will I?’ ‘Oh no, I like being bothered.’(Soto 25). This shows change because Victor wasn’t being himself and was making a fool of himself to try to impress Teresa. Afterwards, he had a talk with Mr. Bueller, and Mr. Bueller gave him advice after French class to be yourself and then Victor changed and was being himself. Then Teresa asked if he wanted to study with her and he said yes. Now Victor learned to be himself not try to be someone else because when he is himself things turn out well for him. Overall, Victor definitely changed a lot throughout the story “Seventh Grade” for good and bad reasons. An example of a negative change was when Michael taught Victor how to scowl because Victor started scowling and thought he was cool and a positive change was when he was being himself and then got to study with Teresa. Lastly, another negative change was in French class and he faked knowing French to try to impress Teresa which ended up embarrassing himself. Do you think change occurs with interactions and

This story fits into the theme of “Self Discovery” when Teresa asks him if he could help her with French. This is proven on page 127 and shows that Teresa likes the Victor who actually knows French, not the real him. Victor is acting like he knew French just to impress Teresa. There is also evidence on page 127 when it says “ After biology class, he raced to the public library and checked out three French textbooks. He was going to like seventh grade.”…

Cognition, as defined in our notes, is the “mental processes related to acquisition, storage, and retrieval” (Frank P. Gengaro, Ph.D., MSW, M.A., LCSW, SI, TM, TM, TL, TMC, TTP). This basically means that cognition has a huge part in acquiring information and storing the information in an efficient way so that we can access it whenever we need to. The main way that we study human cognition is through the humanistic perspective. The humanistic perspective suggests that we are social creatures who interact with other social creatures for the sole purpose of survival. We use cognition in an adaptive, as well as, maladaptive way to survive.…

In the beginning of the story, Victor was just an innocent and naive boy. Mary Shelly has expressed, "While my companion contemplated with a serious and satisfied spirit the magnificent appearances of things, I delighted in investigating their causes. The world was to me a secret which I desired to divine. Curiosity, earnest research to learn the hidden laws of nature, gladness akin to rapture, as they were unfolded to me, are among the earliest sensations I can remember" (35); this reveal that Victor is getting interested in science. As he gets older, he searches for miracles of the world and becomes obsessed in discovering the secret of giving life.…

Victor finds his childhood “exquisitely pleasurable” subject because for him I was such a great time in his life. Moreover the fact that he finds it exquisite connotes that this point in his life was one of the best, if not the best further pointing to the idea that Victor was “good” in this period in his life. His description of life afterward is “misfortunate” and “gloomy” shows that his life after his childhood was quite dark. Similarly the monster also admits his positive intentions in his origins. “My heart was fashioned to be susceptible of love and sympathy; and when wrenched by misery to vice and hatred it did not endure the violence of the change without torture such as you cannot even imagine”(229).…

Professor Polidori, is an alchemist who agreed to help young Victor translate an old recipe, ultimately creating the elixir of life. Polidori seemed like a nice enough man at the beginning of the novel, agreeing to help a group of eager teenagers at no cost. Unfortunately for Victor he never thought this to be unusual as he was pampered all his life with little view on the outside world. Professor Polidori remained charitable throughout the book until he became aware that he only had enough elixir for one.…

As Victor states on page 40, “I need not describe the feelings of those whose dearest ties are rent by that most irreparable evil, the void that presents itself to the soul, and the despair that is exhibited on the countenance.” Victor’s focus after the event is on the rending of his dearest ties- the upset of his life and the lack of ability to change it. After this traumatic event, Victor falls down a path of emotional detachment and despair- and thus the cruelties of life in turn inspire him to perform his own acts of cruelty. Another act of cruelty that influenced Victor’s ideas and actions was during his studies at the University. This is most concisely expressed by this quote by Mr. Krempe on page 43, “ ‘Every minute,’ continued M. Krempe with warmth, ‘every instant that you have wasted on those books is utterly and entirely lost.…
