In The Lottery, a short story written by Shirley Jackson, they have a drawing every year, which they call, hence the name of the story, the lottery. The drawing only takes about two hours in their small town, but in the ones around them it can take up to two days. Everyone gathers for this, to watch the men walk up, take a slip of paper from the old wooden black box that sits on the stage, then silently wait. When their leader, of sorts, tells them to, they open up their slips. All of them but one will be blank. The person with the marked slip is chosen to participate with only their family, drawing again. In The Lottery, the man who chose the marked slip was named Bill Hutchinson. He and his family, three children and a wife, drew a slip. The family member with the marked slip would be stoned to death. Tessie, Bill’s wife, was the one with the marked slip. She begged them and told them it wasn’t fair, that it wasn’t right. They didn’t listen. Readers can learn that change can be a good thing from this story. Change can make you, the people around you, and even the environment, a better person or place.

In The Lottery, one town stopped doing the drawing, so the other towns started letting it go as well, affected by the towns around them. And before Tessie said anything about the lottery being unfair, no one thought anything of it. But after she said something, another person started (Old Man Warner). This proves that when you change, you influence the people around you to change as well. And when they change, it’s most likely for the

The short story that we focused on this week in class was The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. In this story, it explains an annual community wide tradition where every citizen collect rocks and come together in the city square. The irony of the the title, The Lottery, comes alive when the tradition of selecting a name out of a black box results in some person being selected to be stoned to death rather than winning money or a raffle. This is ironic based on the fact when people hear the phrase “The Lottery” you automatically start thinking of people buying tickets to enter into a state or nation wide raffle where they have the chance of winning an enormous amount of money. Even though this is the exact opposite of what occurs in the story we read;…

Neither would have occurred without the “mob mentality”. Regarding mob mentality, Dr. Wendy James says, “What we might not do as individuals we may do as part of a group. People may lose control of their usual inhibitions, as their mentality becomes that of the group” (James). In “The Lottery,” the townspeople blindly follow a tradition that has been passed down year after year. They do not know why the lottery was first created.…

As the operator of the coin powered artillery yelled at the fleeing army, you should never be afraid of change. Throughout the world people deal with change differently based on their background, and the society of those around them. In 1995 1 in 8 bolivians made a living off of coca leaves, be it for making tea, for chewing or for illicit means, and with the U.S.s’ crackdown on drugs this brought hard times for the people of Bolivia. Through hard times people will rely on the opportunities that are available throughout their community, some look to a higher power organization…

The story symbolizes tradition, unquestioned traditions that exist not just in the society of the Lottery. The Lottery suggests collective mentality, despite Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson being married he participates in the stoning of his wife, as do her children and friends. When a group is set in a tradition, people lose their individuality and may succumb to peer pressure. The fact that Mr. Hutchinson and her friends in the town can go from being neighbors and casual with each other one moment, to stoning her the next, show how quickly people can have a change of heart. The heavy emphasis on religious traditions and symbols make Shirley Jacksons the Lottery a dark and mysterious short story that leaves a lasting impression on the…

Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” John F. Kennedy once said, “conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” goes a long way in proving this statement. Her short story revolves around a small farming village that clings to past traditions in hopes of a better life. “The Lottery” refers to events that took place around the time the actual short story was written. Because of this, Jackson has the ability, through her story, to critique the society she lives in.…

I definitely agree with Bornstein on this point. This relates to Fabio Rosa in that one of his initial projects was to bring electricity to the rural poor areas in Brazil. During the time, electricity costs are too high because there is a standard ‘norm’ that safe electricity distribution procedure is supposed to follow. Fabio Rosa, with a firm mind, was not reluctant when the electricity company does not authorize for his experiments and he asked for help. He succeeded in his endeavors.…

In This Side of Home, the main character, Maya, sees her community changing, and she doesn’t like it. But, as the story develops, Maya realizes that change doesn’t always have to be a horrible thing. The theme “you can always find something positive in change” is present in the novel This Side of Home by Renée Watson. This can be seen through the main character realizing that the change in her community will make it safer, and realizing that her sister changing also helped her to look at things in new ways.…
