Chancroid, a sexually transmitted disease, is common in poor regions (Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean) with the weakest public health infrastructure. There has been about 7 million cases of Chancroid a year. (Steen, 2001). However since the U.S. doesn't have weak public health infrastructure, it is still possible to have Chancroid. As of 1997, there were fewer than 1,500 cases of chancroid in the United States per year . Chancroid impacts both men and women (Gale, 2006). Chancroid is caused by the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi, it attacks the tissue and produces an open sore on the external reproductive organs of males and females.
