Richard Chambers authored “Champions of Trust: By Modeling High Standards of Ethical Behavior, Internal Auditors Can Help Shore up Faith in the Organizations They Serve” and argues that ethics are the foundation of trust. Especially regarding big businesses, internal auditors maintain the responsibility to the shareholders to present honest information and bravely act with integrity. The article compares internal auditors to referees who must promote objectivity and address infractions when they occur. To cultivate this, internal auditors must willingly address unethical behavior in early stages and attempt to prevent it by changing a course of action. Throughout this process, trust is essential. Chambers argues that ethics are the foundation of trust and they serve as an essential qualification for auditors. Chambers also argues that, for internal auditors, ethics are the cornerstone for credibility. They must maintain unyielding values and not curb to pressure. Ethics act as the foundation for integrity and trust in an organization. Especially with internal auditors, trust is key. If the public or other members of the company fail to trust auditors, all information they provide may appear falsified, even when the information is founded. With public trust in big businesses recently diminishing, fostering and maintaining trust is of utmost importance. Trust within and outside an organization leads to a successful firm. Without trust, firms falter and fail. If employees cannot trust the information they are given or those they serve, they grow inefficient and unproductive. Chambers is also correct when he asserts that ethics take immense amounts of courage and bravery. Ethical actions are rarely the easy decisions.
