Then the horns and xylophone were added in. The flute soloist would play one song and the rest of the instruments were playing a different one, it actually sounded really cool. At one point it all the sudden got really loud and violent with horns and trumpets playing. The song ended with the flute playing quietly and the the rest of the instrument slowing joining in. The third song was Horner Triptych.…
The group that I will be reviewing in this paper is the student combo that I enjoyed most of all, the group that performed first and was directed by Dr. Routenberg. The group consisted of Andrew Fiorini on the trumpet, Noah Johnson on the trombone, Meghan Walls playing the piano, Andrew Moser on the electric bass, and Collin St. Mary on the drums. Regarding the music…
There was a certain call and response between the instruments if I may say so, where both instrument repeat the same sound back and forth. Throughout this song you mostly hear cymbals in the background and a little bit of solo by each the guitarist and the keyboardist. Then the song “Feel Like Making Love” was third. It was executed in a groove style and you could also hear the electronically recorded sound of cymbals and drums throughout the song. “Embraceable you” was fourth; it was dedication to one of his lady friend who came to hear him.…
The Studio Jazz Ensemble performed various modern Jazz styles such as Bebop, Hard bop, and a Brazilian style called a Bossa Nova. In most of the pieces performed the Trumpet carried out the Melody…
However, for this performance there was an incredibly joyous vibe and a lax attitude due to the style of music being presented. The group was formed by Professor Taylor Ackley in 2015. The concert consisted of different types of traditional…
The piece was played at a moderately slow (andante) tempo, using a homophonic harmony. The melody line was played on the melodica, once again throughout the song. This time the audience got a small taste of what the group would sound like with a…
On April 7, 2016, the GSU Jazz Combos came to play a riveting concert at the Georgia State Recital Hall. Two combos performed that night; the first was a quintet directed by David Frackenpohl, and the second combo of the night was an octet directed by Robert Dickson. The members constituting the first combo were bassist David Schroeder, drummer Zach Benator, guitarist Bob Tarkington, tenor saxophonist Chris Suarez, and vocalist Oriana Wisdom. The members of the second combo were bassist David Schroeder (once again), drummer Jordan Holiman, guitarists Daniel Melton and Alex Hassell, and alto saxophonists Stephen May and Rodney Allen. In addition, the second combo also featured Morehouse College students Dakarai Barclay and Wes Hunn on trumpet…
On Tuesday April 25th, I attended a Bakersfield Jazz Workshop concert at The Mark. The group’s name that performed that night was J.T. Butler and Friends. The men who performed in the group that night were Steve Eisen, John Calo, J.T. Butler, Paul, Daniel Lopez, Doug Davis, and Rick Lincoln. Steve played the trumpet, John played the saxophone, J.T. Butler played the guitar along with Paul, Daniel Lopez played the drums, Doug Davis played the keyboard, and Rick Lincoln played the bass. The style of jazz music the group played sounded like blues and soul jazz.…
Now there were a couple songs in this but I really enjoyed the first one the best, so I focused on that song more but many of the songs are similar in there beat. This concert had four instruments all of which were string instruments which allowed for the song to flow better with each instrument. I love the sound of violin and viola together, while the cello and guitar are strumming at a lower beat than them. Overall this concert was amazing I could see and hear so much beauty through the entire performance.…
As the conductor entered the silent hall, the lights over the audience started to dim until only the orchestra was illuminated. With his penguin-like coattails wobbling behind him, the conductor stepped onto the gray and worn-out podium, and checked each face of his performers. The small wrinkles on his cheeks slightly lifted as each member grinned back at the conductor. The dimly-glowing white baton began to rise in the air, and with a small twist in the wrist, slowly swirled in front of the orchestra, as if chanting a spell to lure the audience into a world of magic. At that moment, the harp began to sing with its angel-resembling voice, soon followed by the other stringed instruments creating a dulcet stream of notes.…
On October 20, 2015 I had the pleasure of watching the University Jazz Ensemble II at the University of Louisville in Comstock. I have now been to a handful of jazz performances and I would have to say that this is my favorite. In this jazz ensemble, Jerry stated this particular ensemble was full of music majors, jazz majors, music educators, and graduates. I like seeing jazz ensembles that are mixed up with young and old, male and female.…
In class, there was a performance done by the Proteus Quartet today. The Proteus Quartet are from Rhode Island College and consists of two violinists, John Sumerlin (violin 1) and Sam Breene (violin2), a violist, Sue Culpo, and cellist, Steve Laven. On this day, this group played Beethoven's Op.18 No.6 “Scherzo: Allegro Con Brio” and Op.127 “Allegro Maestoso” , one of Dvorak’s waltzes, and Star Wars as the mystery piece. One of the pieces that was excellently performed was Beethoven's Op.18 No.6.…
Fredi Pritchett Music 110-08B December 2, 106 J.S. Bach Mass in B Minor On November 5, 2016, I attended the J.S. Bach Mass in B Minor music concert at Converse College, featuring a performance by the Spartanburg Festival Chorus. I enjoyed the musical selections performed by the chorus and saw a few familiar faces of some of my classmates at the concert as well. The venue of the concert was very nice and a lot of older people attended the concert.…
During my ongoing business conference to Colorado to learn about future career opportunities for my dual degrees in Communication design and Computer Science, I got to attend an orchestra concert presented by the Hapless Heroes who were conducted by Leslie Stewart. The show was musical theatre where they had a live orchestra playing in front of the stage while the actors explained the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. I attended this amazing show on the 4th of December. I love learning about Greek Mythology so I was already enthusiastic about attending this show.…
There are many factors that contribute to an ensembles’ sound. Most of which we spend our musical lives practicing; things like tone, vowels, diction, ect. As we begin to make the transition from ensemble member to leader we are thrown yet another contributing factor to sound: conducting. The art of conducting is a continuously growing set of skills for an individual. Many of the greatest conductors have spent decades perfecting their craft and creating their style, while building their musicality.…
