Challenging common sense! Thinking sociologically Challenging common sense is almost the daily routine for a sociologist. Sociological thinkers tackle social issues not only by the front cover but rather dig deeper and engage in the process of abstraction. To think sociologically is to critique the common assumptions and perceptions regarding the many issues that exist in the society [1]. In order to effectively analyze the society, we must have a sociological imagination, which is “the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society. [2]” It is then possible for different people to have their own account of how the social structures is produced, transformed and functioned. In addition, sociologists use Peter Berger’s idea of “the strange in the familiar” and “the general in the particular” to critique the social issues [1]. Although divorce is technically a private/personal trouble between the two couples that were not able to get along. So ideally, fixing the problem by counselling the couple would be the best choice. Could the private matter between two people become a public issue in the society today? By looking at the impact of divorced marriages, it is most evident that the children left behind will undergo suffering the most. Young children left with only a parent will often seek other candidates such as peers and media influences to help them understand how the opposite gendered parent should behave and act. On average, children in problematic families tends to have a lower level of well-being than the children in two-parent families. This directly relates to the increasing instances of drug abuse, domestic violence and crimes in general.
