Personal Narrative: My Decision To Become An Effective Teacher

I interviewed Mrs. Vanessa Andrews. She is a retired general education teacher from South Carolina. She taught at a Christian Academy private school in South Carolina. I met her at the hospital in Macon where her husband was a patient. She saw me working on school work at the desk and asked what I was studying. I told her my major was Early Childhood/Special Education. She told me about her experience as a teacher so I asked her if I could ask her a few questions about the Special Education program at the school where she taught for my assignment and she agreed.

Tekeisha: Why did you decide to become a teacher?
Mrs. Andrews: I chose to teach because it makes me happy to help people think and learn. I love building relationships. I enjoyed getting to know my students and learning their talents. I also enjoyed watching them blossom and celebrating their success. I believe that once a child is matched with a good teacher that is caring, the will succeed.
Tekeisha: From your perspective, what does it take to become an effective teacher?
Mrs. Andrews: Being confident in what you are teaching in

Andrews informed me that private schools are not required to provide students with special education services. She said that the public school district is supposed to set aside a fund to provide special education services to public schools, but may be limited. A parent of a student needs special education services may ask the public school district to evaluate the child for Special Education services and if they agree, the evaluation will be provided at no cost. The schools must then work together to create a service plan. Mrs. Andrew’s only objective to the service plan is that it may provide fewer services than what a child would receive at a public school. She did not agree with this decision and felt that it should be changed. She felt that every school should accompany students with special needs without having to go through a long process of getting it

The whole way I could feel butterflies flying around my stomach. As my mom and I got near the only three story, brown, and re- model building that stood out, my inside voice in my mind sounded like a recording machine repeating what I was going to say for my first work interview. “We are here, now go in there and show them what you got.”…

I began working on my flexibility when I was only a year old--I did the splits across the Atlantic Ocean. With one foot in Bulgaria and one in America, I had to learn to hold my stretch for months at a time. Soon after I was carried, swaddled, and sung to on the flight into the United States, I learned to walk and speak English. I have PBS Kids and Looney Tunes mostly to thank for this, though I admit American public education could possibly have had some part in my fluency. It wasn’t long before I began writing semi-comprehensibly and nagging my parents in not one but two languages.…

When I was in middle school, I tapped my pencil on my desk, bounced around in my seat, and spoke to my friends in class. I never realized how much it really affected my classroom performance. However, as I grew up and matured I took a step back and asked myself, “Why am I doing these things?” I realized that I was nervous about doing well due to my lack of confidence and I was only being provocative. I have noticed that you share the characteristic of being clamorous in class as well.…

During our principalship course, we had a very passionate discussion about how some of our colleagues perceive teachers that go through Teach for America or any alternative certification process for that matter. Some of my colleagues appear to be very bias in terms of qualifications and commitment of these particular teachers. I would have to respectfully disagree with them and perhaps I may as well be bias due to the route I chose to take to become an educator. Ten years ago, I chose to make the biggest decision in my life and that was to become a teacher. And the way I went about obtaining my certification at that time was through an alternative certification program offered by Rockford University.…
