Individuals face enormous challenges throughout the course of life . In the commonly used saying “Life isn’t about how many times one fails , but rather how he picks himself up “ . It is relatively blatant the challenges he faced make up Odysseus character . Many times he failed and made things harder than it needed to be . But in the end he finds his way through them . In the Odyssey Odysseus has to face many challenges during his journey , a few of these challenges were cannibalistic Cyclopes , giant whirlpools , determined suitors , plus much more . However , even though all of those challenges and enemies seem like the biggest threats , they really are not. Odysseus’s ego and pride is what hurt him the most because it slows him down for …show more content…
Odysseus’s self determination and arrogance made the better half of the tasks on Circe’s island much worse . For instance when on the island they just got done working hard to get away from Polyphemus . Odysseus’s plan worked to how he planned, they were all set to leave , when all of a sudden Odysseus’s pride trumps what he needs to do (which is to get out of there) . Also he teases back at what odysseus called it the “lawless brute” , then goes on to say Cyclops is a “weak coward it was whose crew you bent to devour there in your cave you with your savage force. Your disgusting crimes came down on your head, you flagrant cannibal, daring to eat your guests in your own house, so Zeus and the gods have paid you back” (Homer 226) . Plus Odysseus makes more unnecessary remark to Cyclops, like telling him what happened (Homer 227) . Prior to that , Cyclops did not know anything about what happened or anything about him. He effortlessly could have gotten away. Next, Cyclops shouts to his father Poseidon saying that he wants to make sure Odysseus and his crew never reach Ithaca . He is then stuck on Calypso’s island and his return to Ithaca is mightily delayed because of his ego . Odysseus’s shortage of smart judgement made the Cyclops enraged . Polyphemus was so deranged he took a humongous chunk of mountain, and threw it at Odysseus’s ship; shipping him and his crew …show more content…
To start , the men are on the island of Aeaea ( home of Circe ) , Odysseus saw smoke from the fire and sent his 22 men to go explore the hall . After that , she invites them in for a feast , so the men eat and suddenly turn into pigs , because of a potion Circe put into the meat . That is one reason why Circe was such a huge threat , they turned them into pigs and put their life at risk . Secondly , Goddesses can be exceptionally dangerous , they are so unpredictable . Unlike the Cyclops , suitors , Cicones , Lotus eaters . Circe is a goddess and has way more potential to do harm to Odysseus and his crew . Another reason why some believe Circe was the biggest threat was that Odysseus and his crew were there on the island for roughly a couple of years! It is true that Circe was a dangerous threat , however I believe it was the least dangerous threat . Evidence for that is , not only did they not lose any men , but they also got a good dose of unexpected valuable advice from Circe! She tells them how to sail to Hades, also warns them about the sirens and how to prepare (block the ears with wax) . In addition, she ideally saved Odysseus and his crews life by telling them to go in the path of Scylla instead of the giant whirlpool , then Circe then decides to give Odysseus some very important advice before he goes “ great captain!, a wind and the honey lights of home are all you may seek “ (Homer

Similarly, the next time Odysseus’ curiosity leads him to do something dangerous is when he is faced with the island of the cunning, sly goddess Circe. He thinks about what should be done, and sends out another search party. Odysseus thought “’…the better course would be to return first to my ship on the beach, give my men a meal, and then send out an exploring party’” (10.153-155). He does this, and the men in the group are turned to pigs by Circe’s drugs. They would have stayed in that state forever if not for the gods’ help.…

With the bag of winds blowing the whole ship back to where they began and the backlash from the crew as the result of him hiding their destiny with the Scylla, it is shown that Odysseus was not a perfect leader. 2 Both Circe and Calypso had been with and liked Odysseus because they believed it was their destiny. Circe was keeping Odysseus on her island for a short amount of time in exchange for valuable information about his journey home. However, she had spoiled him during his time on her island, making him lose track of time, keeping him much longer than he originally intended.…

Odysseus of Ithaka encounters many challenges throughout The Odyssey, including the aftermath of the Trojan War, the Lotus Eaters, the Seirênês and more. Though he faces multiple challenges, Odysseus fails to learn from his mistakes and does not develop nor grow in character after the Trojan War. He does not evaluate the faults he has made in order to avoid the same issues in the future, and instead continues his journey with the belief that he is not the one at fault for the complications he and his crew encounter. Odysseus is a static character due to the fact that he does not jump at the opportunity to change, and instead remains to be a man who yearns to go home, and fails to learn from the lessons the Gods are aiming to teach him. Odysseus fails to…

He tricked the Cyclops into eating and drinking heavily, and while it was asleep his crew drove a charred stake into its eye. Overnight, Odysseus comes up with the idea to tie them up to the undersides of the Cyclops’s rams. The following morning, the Cyclops lets his livestock out, and Odysseus and his crew manage to escape to their boat. Had Odysseus not come up with this idea, his crew and him would have been stuck in the Cyclops’s cave and likely killed by him. This excerpt is another example of how great Odysseus was as a…

Odysseus and the crew gets into a tough situation and ends up stabbing a cyclops in the eye and blinds him to escape. When they get a safe distance from the island, Odysseus, filled with anger and pride yells, “Cyclops- if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so- say Odysseus, raider of cities” (227). In the Odyssey, Odysseus travels a long journey back to his home, Ithaca, after fighting in the Trojan War for 10 long years. However, I strongly believe Odysseus himself was the reason that he witnessed a long journey returning to his homeland. If he hadn’t made specific decisions, I’d expect that Odysseus would be able to return earlier. In the epic, I believe that three major decisions could’ve helped Odysseus sail back towards home sooner if he had chosen the right choice. One of the significant decisions is Odysseus’ accord to rest on the Cyclops’ island and approach the Cyclops’ cave.…
