There needs to be an agreement of terms or the educational system will remain divided. Once we are a team who is united, we can then establish a balanced relationship. Since we are social beings, it is critical for us to have a relationship with others in this puzzling life and when we don’t, that is where we fall apart and fail at our jobs. Educators need to feel that they are important in their student’s life; they need to have ownership of all the years they worked so hard on. When educators feel that they’ve failed, they will lack confidence and start to silently discourage their students. Most of all, having communication between other staff and students is a stress reliever. Resources may be scarce, collaboration may need reinforcement and attitude may need to be assessed, but the work is not in vain. A parent of a 17-year-old with autism explained the following: “Accept the fact that our children, even though they have cognitive or behavioral Disabilities, they age just like everybody else. They may mature at a different level and a different rate, but they are maturing . . . Rather than pushing them into a program that’s really for young children and is totally inappropriate, they should have age-appropriate things, have toys that are age-appropriate.
