Have you ever had to try something new by yourself, something you’ve never done before? Have you had a flat tire in the middle of nowhere and you have no one to call. How will you change the tire if you never have done it? How do you know what tools you need when you don’t even know their names. Have you felt the desperation of not having anyone to call, or the anxiety of not being able to, change the tire and getting home safely. Do you have a jack in your car, can you loosen up the lug nuts, and is your spare tire in your car. Not being able to express yourself or being able to answer any answers is very frustrating. It’s like trying to speak with your pet but you don’t know what they want because you don’t bark. Yes, you feel like another specie, as if you don’t belong in that world. We don’t have translator everywhere we go, and not many are offered. The hospitals sometimes don’t have interpreters to help those who don’t understand English, and even if we are in America we still should offer interpreters. Interpreters can save lives, trying to tell your doctors if you’re allergic to something or what are you feeling is something that can save a life. Language is not only a way of communication but also a way of safety. When beginning a new job you need to understand standard procedures and rules. It difficult to get training when you are an immigrant because you will get half the information while trying to understand the other half. Immigrants don’t always have people by them telling what the boss wants, that’s why some can’t advance in their jobs because they don’t have the proper language skills to operate in other positions. But why not learns the language right? Wrong, sometimes they don’t have the time to seat in a four hour lecture losing time that they could be working.
