Nurses often work in situations where there can be a conflict of interest. In the event of caring for a patient that is pregnant and smoking, as a nurse, a commitment needs to be made to resolve the bias against pregnant smokers. Eliminating any biases can ensure my focus is on the patient’s safety, securing the patient’s interest, and certifying my professional integrity as a nurse. Initially, I would give my patient firm and clear advice that smoking while pregnant has serious risks as well as the benefits of giving it up so she is fully aware of her situation. Though she may have already heard this information from her obstetrician, it is my responsibility as a nurse to reiterate the significance of a healthy pregnancy. However, if she refuses to stop smoking, I would respect her choice and continue to give her the utmost, patient-centered care. Acknowledging and accepting that she does not want to quit can help maintain a healthy connection between us and she may be more willing to voice her concerns. It is in my best judgment to know the boundaries between my personal and professional values to not jeopardize my nurse-patient

I also gained tremendous encouragement from this motto when I decided to pursue a nursing career in my forties. Some of my family and friends have been telling me that it’s unwise to give up my business and start a new career in a different field at my age. They think I’m at a huge disadvantage compared to most of my young classmates. However, I believe that my genuine interest and enthusiasm in nursing will help me to excel in this field and achieve my career goal. After all, “nothing is impossible to a willing heart”.…

Many nurses are faced with ethical and legal dilemmas constantly in the health care setting. We as nurses need to understand the laws that pertain to our scope of practice and respect our patient’s decisions whether they interfere with our own personal views. I also agree that the nursing career’s pathways can be confusing. Individuals can obtain the RN license through a diploma, ADN, or BSN. In my assessment, the Department of Education should find a solution for this issue, so the patients can be sure of what will be the minimum knowledge or skills his or her nurse may have.…
