In her neighborhood, she was given faces and had to deal with a lot of racism from prejudice, and she had to deal with a mob. “Some of the white people looked completely horrified, while others raised their fists to us. Others shouted ugly words.” - according to Beals. To respond to the negativity, Beals had to tune out anything negative she hears about her. These events caused Melba Beals to think that she needed to look like she is unbreakable by these threats. She also knew that with very few people on her side you have to continue by keep moving forward, which she did. In here she explains what she has done that not much people have done before, “Step by step, we climbed upwards where none of my people had ever walked before as a student.” - according to Beals.
