Mothers want their children to be better than they are. Mothers guide their children to a path which lead them to a better future by teaching them what the mother thinks is the best for their children. He describes how life actually is by using a few imageries. “It’s had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And no carpet on the floor-Bare.” Tacks, splinters, boards torn up and places with no carpet. They are the imageries the poet uses to tell the reader what life is truly about. Those imageries are the things that no one likes and they can make you hurt. These slang words show that the mother in this poem had a tough childhood. It’s because people who have had education will not use them. We can know from this that mothers will use their experience to teach their children and hope the best for the children.
After that, the poet also used metaphor. “ And sometimes goin’ in the dark, Where there ain’t been no light.”. Dark and light are to express down times and hope.
