Challenges In California During The California Gold Rush

Challenges are created everyday. The California Gold Rush occurred in 1848-1855. People from California and all over the world, went to California for gold. During the Gold Rush, California grew in cities and towns because of the increasing population. Because of the long journey, process of mining, and high crime rate were common, many individuals faced challenges during the California Gold Rush. Getting to California for the Gold Rush was a long journey. First, Gold Rush families had to choose between two routes to get to California. When traveling by land miners had a hard time navigating and, when traveling by sea miners faced rough seas and harsh winds. Traveling lasted months, and was harsh on the families seeking gold. First, in “Crime and Justice” the author states, “When a crime was discovered and a suspect caught, a miners' meeting would be called. A trial was held, and a judgment passed down. Since there were no jails to hold criminals, the verdict was swiftly carried out. Petty thieves were whipped, and sometimes their ears were cut off to mark them as robbers. Criminals that murdered or stole large amounts of property were hanged.”(Saffer 44) Stealing hurt the people, many miners didn’t have much money and with no criminal system crime was constantly happening. Equipment was expensive, food was expensive, hotels were expensive, therefore life was expensive. In result, stealing was harsh on the miners. Second, hounds were soldiers from New York who didn't appreciate miners moving in "their land". Therefore, they liked to steal and take things from other miners. They stole from merchants and demanded free food and drinks. (Saffer 44) During the Gold Rush many criminal groups would form stealing from the miners. The miners realized that was a recurring challenge. Therefore, they grouped the hounds together and gave them a trial to determine their punishment. Lastly, An Australian group called the “Sydney Duck” decided to create a fire in San Francisco, creating chaos with the people of California. They looted offices, stores, and homes taking all they could handle. A group of California people made a group to catch the Australian group. (Saffer 44) In order to keep the city safe and make sure the group would no longer be a challenge the miners created a group to seek out the ducks. When they found them they killed four and told the rest to leave and never come back. These actions essentially got rid of all crime and solved the crime rate issue. Crime was an issue that miners
