Second, hounds were soldiers from New York who didn't appreciate miners moving in "their land". Therefore, they liked to steal and take things from other miners. They stole from merchants and demanded free food and drinks. (Saffer 44) During the Gold Rush many criminal groups would form stealing from the miners. The miners realized that was a recurring challenge. Therefore, they grouped the hounds together and gave them a trial to determine their punishment. Lastly, An Australian group called the “Sydney Duck” decided to create a fire in San Francisco, creating chaos with the people of California. They looted offices, stores, and homes taking all they could handle. A group of California people made a group to catch the Australian group.
