Challenge Course Paper
Challenge Course Paper On November 6, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., I participated in the Challenge Course for the first time. I never even knew that the Challenge Course existed at Sac State until I took RPTA 122. Therefore, I was nervous and filled with curiosity because I had no idea what we would be doing during the Low Challenge Course, except that it would consist of team activities. I was more nervous for the High Challenge Course, since I was told that it would include rope climbing or jumping from a tree, which sounded terrifying. At first, some of my motivation for participating was definitely for my grade, to have fun, to satisfy my curiosity, and to interact with my classmates. …show more content…
At first, I was extrinsically motivated to participate in the activities during the challenge course for the sake of my grade. “Extrinsic goals are those that yield some reward which is separate and apart from an activity” (Olson, 2008, p. 56). However, when I actually participated in the activities, I was not only extrinsically motivated, but I was also intrinsically motivated, which are similar to my motivations for my general leisure activities. Throughout the Low Challenge Course, I came to enjoy the team activities that I participated in. With only 10 blocks of wood, a blind person, and the requirement to always have some part of our body touching the block, it was hard for us to get across to the end. At the beginning, we kept losing blocks and had a vague idea of how all of us would get across without touching the ground. However, we did not give up. We were all motivated to take on the challenge, no matter how many tries it took. We had leaders taking charge and team members following their advice or orders. There was also communication between the members; we provided ideas on how to get across and supported one another to prevent from falling off the blocks. Everyone was just focused on reaching to the end. Once we all got to the end, it was satisfying; we all had a sense of achievement, after our multiple tries.
Through this activity, I compared my motivations to my pre-challenge course motivations and motivations for general leisure. When the day just started, I was so tired, so I just wanted the day to go by. I did not really put in much effort during the beginning activities. However, without noticing it, I subconsciously putted in a lot of effort in the team activities that we did. I wanted to achieve my goal, which is to reach to the end without falling off the blocks with my teammates. I noticed that there were not many differences in my motivations between
