There are many positions that make up the whole police community. These positions make up the

chain of command. The chain of command starts off with a police officer and makes it's way up to

Chief of Police. One usually starts the job as an officer and works his way up throughout the years.

The police officers is assigned to different types of patrol while on duty. He is assigned foot patrol,

car patrol, and sometimes bicycle patrol. He surveys the area for crimes being committed and ways to

prevent crime from happening. The police officer write citations when needed and makes arrest.

and other services. (Morgan, n.d). Next comes the Police Deputy Chief (assistant chief). The police

deputy chief acts as chief of staff to the chief of police. He is in charge of keeping the police chief

informed of all operational activities. Lastly comes the Chief of Police. The chief of police is

responsible for the planning, administration, and operation of the whole police department. His

purpose is to protect people and property and the preservation of peace.

Many problems can arise within the structure of a police agency. Such problems could be the fact

that the average officer has ideals and knows the best way to perform his job, yet organizational

dictates must have their way. (Stevens, 2009 pg.188). Many patrol officers feel supervisors tend to

manage through intimidation models and are treated with disrespect. (Stevens, 2009 pg. 220).
