Cesare Beccaria was an Italian criminologist and economist who was a key contributor to the reform of the criminal justice system. Born in Milan, Beccaria would show traits of his character from an early age (Francis A. Allen 1). He was an often enthusiastic boy, yet he had periods in which he suffered constant mood swings. His constant changes in behavior would accompany him for the remainder of his years. Beccaria started his education at the age of eight, but did not show any signs of his major achievements in the field of criminal justice (Francis A. Allen 1). The society was ultimately trying to “wage relentless war against economic disorder, bureaucratic tyranny, religious narrow-mindedness, and intellectual pedantry” (Cesare Beccaria, brittanica.com). The academy of fists was dedicated to the economic, political, and administrative reform. Academy members had encouraged Beccaria to read writings on the Enlightenment from both France and Britain. These readings influenced him to do some writing of his own, so Beccaria published his first Essay, On Remedies for the Monetary Disorders of Milan in the Year 1762 (Cesare Beccaria, Biography.com). This essay enjoyed great success (Cesare Beccaria, Famousphilosophers.org) Due to his early success, Beccaria was encouraged to continue his writing. In 1764, Cesare Beccaria created his highest acclaimed and most stimulating essay, On Crimes and Punishment (Cesare Beccaria, Famousphilosophers.org). He was the head of Public Economy and Commerce at the Palatine School, where he took the duty of a lecturer for approximately two years (Cesare Beccaria, Biography.com). He had also taken time serving for Supreme Economical Council of Milan. While serving, he stressed the ideas of public education and labor relations (Cesare Beccaria, Biography.com). Beccaria 's economic ideas also helped introduce the Metric System into France. In all, his economic career was very productive, but not quite as productive as his career
