Cesarean Section Essay

Back in 1623 Macbeth was first published, which had been written by William Shakespeare. The play was set in Scotland during 1034-1057. Many people don’t realize that most of the characters really lived and that Duncan was king from 1034-1040 , then Macbeth ruled from 1040-1057. In Macbeth, one of the main characters, Macduff, had been “from his mother's womb / Untimely ripped,” which means he had born from a cesarean section. Many ask the question of how could cesarean section (also called c-section) been done back in 10th century Scotland. It actually has been part of human culture since ancient times. The origin of ‘cesarean’ has apparently been distorted over time and is commonly believed to be from the surgical birth of Julius Caesar, however that seems very unlikely since she had lived to hear of her son’s invasion of Britain. “In Roman law under Caesar decreed that all women who were so fated by childbirth must be cut open; hence, cesarean” (USA). …show more content…
Shakespeare also had written more than one play that had a character that was born via c-section. His play, Julius Caesar, states that Caesar was born of a c-section and his mother had lived. One of the oldest story that had a cesarean section was Tristan and Isolde. “The 12th century hero, Tristan, in the legend of Tristan and Isolde, was apparently born from a cesarean section.” Samuel Rowley, a 17th century English dramatist and actor/ writer, also wrote a play that dealt with c-sections. Samuel Rowley’s When You See Me, You Know Me, deals with the story or Queen Jane who was the third wife of Henry VIII. “There is very strong evidence that Henry VIII had ordered a cesarean section to save the life of his son - the future Edward VI, whether at the behest of his wife or not isn’t known. Of course in those days, this operation resulted in almost certain death for the women, and Queen Jane died some 12 days later from complications”

The article, The Score by Atul Gawande, illustrated the history of pregnancy deliveries with the article profiling Elizabeth Rourke and her journey of giving birth to her daughter. The Score is an article where I acquired knowledge from a topic that I knew very little about. For example, the process of how women are in labor and how long they must wait until they are “in labor.” In addition, how long they must wait until their contractions are in a certain pace, “the nurse asked if the contractions were five minutes apart and lasted more than a minute. No.…

Dr. James Miranda Barry, a medical graduate of Edinburgh, was a British military officer and surgeon who was appointed inspector of hospitals in 1857. There had been rumors during his life that he was involved in at least one long-term “homosexual” relationship (6). Dr. Barry was actually Dr. Miranda Stewart. Her sex was not discovered until she was laid out for her funeral in 1865, when abdominal findings were suggestive of a previous pregnancy (2, 6). Upon her death, a friend commented, “She chose to be a military doctor.…

Throughout history there have been many ideals about a woman’s body – what an “attractive” woman should look like, act like, smell like, be like. A woman’s body has been appreciated for its beauty as well as objectified based on what that body can do for society --whether or not it is truly fruitful and multiplying; whether or not it is visually pleasing; whether or not it makes money. Women’s health has been at the mercy of male physicians and women’s minds kept as unexercised and out of shape as possible. The “why” behind this phenomenon of oppression has been hotly debated. The reality, however, is that, from the act of childbirth to eating disorders, a woman’s body is a social celebrity.…

I performed an uncomplicated D&E procedure… went through the task of reassembling the fetal parts in the metal tray. It is an odd ritual that abortion providers perform – required as a clinical safety measure ... – but it also permits us in an odd way to pay respect to the fetus … even as we simultaneously have complete disregard for it. Then I rushed upstairs to take overnight call on labour and delivery. The first patient that came in was prematurely delivering at 23– 24 weeks… Later...…

Many parents look back on the day their first child was born, and consider it to be the greatest day of their life. The moments shortly after labor seem subtle and all worth it for brief moment; but it is just the beginning to the journey of a long parenthood. So, what about the nine months before labor that makes the journey so excruciating for a couple? For a woman, it might be the pain that comes with a growing baby inside of them, or the immense amount of hormonal spikes they endure. During the long journey a couple takes on many obstacles throughout the three trimesters, but few people actually shed any light on the man’s role during a pregnancy.…

One of today’s most controversial topics, concerns whether a woman has the right to end late term pregnancies through abortion. Specifically, whether it is morally permissible for women to receive abortions in the third trimester. In this paper, we will discuss both sides of the argument for “pro” and “anti” groups on whether it is permissible to have a third trimester abortion. To elaborate on what the third trimester entail is, the third trimester is considered to between weeks 24-40. When women receive abortions in this trimester is it usually too late to use medicine to abort the fetus, so often women will have an intact dilation and extraction abortion (Munson & Ian, 2016, p. 457).…

“Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother’s womb/Untimely ripp’d.” The connection between my thesis and the topic is that the witches said to macbeth that the only person who can kill him is not born from a woman, when the witches said that macbeth thought he was invincible because everyone is born of woman. Macbeth became very cocky when the sisters told him this but macduff as he said that he was “untimely ripp’d” which means that the mother of macduff died while trying to give birth so right when she died the doctors cut her open and took out macduff so he is the only one that can kill macbeth. The final battle between macbeth and macduff is very significant because macbeth had macduffs wife and child killed so macduff has a vengence and macbeth knows he is going to die because the prophecy is true that only macduff can harm him so macbeth accepts his fate of death. Macbeth knew what he had coming but he didn’t shy away from death, he accepted it molded by it.…

A C-section was originally intended to be used when it is impossible or dangerous to deliver a baby vaginally. This technique may be used when a fetus is in fetal distress or can simply not fit through the mother’s pelvis. The birth complications could be very dangerous to the fetus and the C- section helped deliver the baby safely. The medical indications of a C-Section being needed are overshadowed by a large increase in Cesarean’s because of patient choice and convenience.…
