Cesar’s method should be considered wrong because it inflicts emotional and physical harm on the dog. This is apparent when Mark Derr writes “...his confrontational methods include physical and psychological intimidation, like finger jabs, choke collars, extended sessions on a treadmill and what is called flooding, or overwhelming the animal with the thing it fears…” (Derr 603). This is obviously no way to treat an animal, let alone your pet. Years of mistreatment will lead to new, unprecedented medical problems within the dog. If you ignore them, forget to feed them, do not let them out, hit them, then they will loathe you. On the other hand, if you treat them kindly, reward them, and overall be their friend, they will love you as they should. Although it is clear that trainers want their dogs to love them, Cesar’s method to not allow for the dog to love you. As stated previously Cesar isn’t against violence when it comes to training dogs, but his training regimen also includes little room for praise and rewards. This is shown when Derr writes “Rewards are absent and praise scarce” (Derr 604). Rewarding good behavior is a part of good parenting as well as good dog training.
