Due to the division of the National Labor Relations, every agricultural worker suffered from bad working conditions; they also receive a low payment and no working insurance ("United Farm Workers"). Some of the demands requested for the far workers were: break times, water supply, protection of female workers against sexual harassment, elimination of racial discrimination, protection against pesticides and the limitation if the usage of lethal and dangerous pesticides such as DDT on the working fields ( "Rodriguez, Arturo S." ). Due to the language barrier and the level of education within the immigrant communities, fighting harsh treatments became inevitable ("United Farm Worker"). Cesar Chavez started working the land, then later creating and becoming the leader of the National Farm Workers Associations; this became the first successful agricultural union in the U.S. ("Cesár Chávez." One of biggest challenge he faced during the strikes was the vulnerability to be blacklisted, by it, an individual would be marked as a threat and harmful reducing opportunities for obtaining a job in the near future ("Brimmer, 13").
