Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 200 related sexually transmitted viruses that can lead to cancer and disease. The most common vaccinations given to adolescent boys and girls to protect against these cancers are Cervarix and Gardasil. Cervarix protects against HPV 16 and HPV 18, whereas Gardasil protects against HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18. Gardasil was approved by the FDA in 2006 and Cervarix was approved in 2009. Since Gardasil is older, it is used more frequently and has more data collected related to it.
