The purpose of the Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) was initiated to blend nursing with some medical aspects of primary patient care. CNP’s are nurses who practice both nursing and medicine in an expanded role that builds on caring, the essence of nursing. NP’s are one of the four roles that fall under the APRN umbrella. According to AANP NP’s comprises fifty-five percent of all APN’s (Per the American Association of Nurse Practitioners(AANP) APRN’s provide health promotion, knowledge of disease prevention, teaching and counseling functions, and patient advocacy (Sangster-Gormley, Frisch & Schreiber, 2013).
