I am writting personally to request a cosideration for exemption from the requirement of the earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college for admission to the physician assistant (PA) program. I understand that the Physician Assistant program is highly competitive program, and that the fact of earning a baccalaureate from a regional institution is only one important indicator to determine a student’s potential for succes at a graduate level. Physician assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine under the supervision of a physician (AAPA). These health care professionals are educated to provide treatment, diagnostics of injuries or illnesses, preform physical examinations, take medical histories, order laboratory tests and x-rays, and depending on their level of study they may assist in surgery procedures (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The code of ethics for the health care occupation of a Physician assistant has “four main principles: autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice”(AAPA). In June 2012, I finished my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Texas in Arlington. My BSN provides a comprehensive foundation in learning nursing theories, clinical applications, critical thinking skills, nursing research, leadership and management roles, public and community health care that are essential to be successful in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program. A career as a physician’s assistant is one of just a few careers that allow you to treat injuries or diagnose illnesses and even assist in surgeries alongside a certified doctor, all without an going through an insane amount of medical school, internships, tests and programs as a normal doctor would. Since physician’s assistants (or PA’s) work under the watchful eye of licensed intelligent physicians, they are required to have the same training but not nearly in as much length or detail. Physician assistant work may be demanding both physically and emotionally, therefore, stability is necessary. As the average age of health care workers and the general population rises, the need for the trained health care providers also rises. I believe that I have chosen the perfect field to join because wherever I go there will always be a job. Medical Assisting is a career path with so much potential. One of the biggest reasons I choose the medical field is it’s a field filled with compassion and a career I’m sure to be proud of at the end of my journey.
